6 Different Types of Botox and Their Characteristics

You have likely heard of Botox. It’s everywhere! Botox is an extremely popular treatment in cosmetics used to correct imperfections in various areas. Every year, more than 6 million Botox injections are given in North America.

Botox is made from is a substance that comes from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The treatment helps you achieve smooth and wrinkle-free skin. It can be customized in different ways, and many people aren’t aware that there are several different types of Botox available.

For anyone starting with first-time Botox injections, going with standard Botox is often the way to go. If there isn’t a reason to switch and use another product, standard Botox offers the greatest benefits and long-lasting effects. It is the most cost-effective compared with other alternatives.

You can consult a trained Botox professional at a Toronto cosmetic clinic and get the desired information on what they use and what Botox they recommend. Here are the most popular and effective Botox varieties.

Type #1: Botox

Botox is used to remedy fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment is proven in clinical trials and widely used worldwide practically and effectively. When you go into your first consultation for Botox injections, the general term Botox will signify standard Botox.

Standard Botox lasts a lengthy amount of time post-procedure and is one of the best types of Botox you can have. You may be recommended another type of Botox, though, depending on what skin concern you are looking to address. Each variety of Botox has a purpose and is recommended at the consultant’s discretion.

You may see terms bandied about like Baby Botox, BroTox, and BlowTox. These are all products that use standard Botox. These types of Botox are similarly tailored to different markets:

  • Baby Botox for the younger twenty-something crowd
  • BroTox for men interested in Botox injections
  • BlowTox targeting people who want to stop scalp sweating

Type #2: Dysport

While Botox became popular through the 1980s, Dysport arrived in the 1990s, with its use increasing ever since. Dysport is mainly used on the glabellar lines as opposed to the more widespread use of Botox.

Dysport is very similar to Botox in a lot of ways. However, there are a few main differences. It is thought to work faster than Botox but does not last as long. That said, some report comparable results with Botox and Dysport. You might consider Dysport over Botox because it’s generally more affordable, although speak with your consultant about what might be best for your unique skin concern.

Type #3: Xeomin

After Dysport came along in the 1990s, Xeomin was launched in the noughties. Xeomin is a bit different and is publicized as extensively purified botulinum toxin A. This type of Botox contains no additives and does not require refrigeration.

How Xeomin is made involves removing complex proteins from botulinum toxin A, resulting in a reduction in the immune reaction that other products face. As the immune system reacts to something like Botox injections, the body adapts, eventually becoming less effective.

Xeomin does not have those proteins, and that immune response is not as present, meaning that a person is less likely to become resistant to Xeomin injections than other varieties.

Type #4: Myobloc

Myobloc is quite a bit different from standard Botox. While standard Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are made from botulinum toxin type A, Myobloc is made from botulinum toxin type B. It is the singular botulinum toxin type B product available in Canada.

Individuals who have become immune to Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are often referred to as Myobloc. This is where Myobloc has cultivated a certain section of the marketplace. The cosmetic effects of Myobloc have a faster onset than Botox and can cover a larger area in general, although the duration of its action is typically shorter than Botox.

Type #5: Jeuveau

Jeuveau is relatively new, having only been approved in 2019 for application on moderate-to-severe glabellar lines. It’s the new kid on the block and, as is often the case, has lots of hype swirling around it.

Jeuveau is almost identical in design to Botox but seems to work better on some people, particularly those who are somewhat resistant to Botox injections. As injections happen, again and again, the muscles gradually weaken over time in a lot of people.

For them, Jeuveau is an alternative that might work. However, this type of Botox must be said to be cautious on account of its newness.

Type #6: DAXI

DAXI is even newer than Jeuveau and was FDA-approved in the United States in April 2022. As an injectable, DAXI is argued to deliver a similar effect as Botox, Dysport, and other types of injectables mentioned in this.

Where DAXI could prove advantageous is that its effect may last notably longer. While Botox injections last 3-4 months, the makers of DAXI argue results could extend up to 6-8 months.

Unfortunately, DAXI has not yet been approved for use in Canada. It’s still early days for this product.
